La Cala forms part of the Municipality of Mijas, situated in the middle of the Costa del Sol on a popular coastal zone. Urbanised within a 12 kilometer radius, with a population of over 24,000 inhabitants, La Cala is nestled between Fuengirola to the east, and Marbella to the west and is just 30 minutes away from Malaga International Airport.
La Cala is a popular tourist town with a large intersection of both a Spanish and international expat population. The lively village is known for its golf courses as well as its well-maintained beaches, shops, tapas bars and quaint restaurants. Serviced by a number of resources supplied by neighbouring towns such as Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Marbella, the municipal also offers a variety of amenities including health centers, schools, a culture centre and library.
La Cala de Mijas is home to some of the most renowned golf courses in Andalucia, among them La Noria Golf Club Resort, a 9-hole golf course near the market ground, and the 5-star La Cala Golf resort which offers 3 championship courses, and a luxury hotel with spa facilities. Guests and residents of these resorts and surrounding area can enjoy rounds of golf surrounded by Spanish countryside, as well as many other opportunities to enjoy the outdoors including horse-riding, hiking, mountain biking, Pilates and Yoga, tennis and more.
La Cala's town centre offers an abundance of shops, tapas bars and restaurants offering traditional Spanish cuisine, Indian, Chinese, Italian and Thai, as well as British eateries and bars such as El Gusto or Biddy Mulligan's Irish-themed bar.
La Cala has a large cultural centre which caters to visitors and residents alike offering organised activities such as hiking, language classes and children's events during the summer months. La Cala is also home to a large new sports centre which is open to the public, offering a variety of excellent facilities for indoor sports and a well-equipped gym run by the local council. There is also an English-run riding stable just a few kilometres inland and a former racecourse with a thriving go-kart track open to the public.
A popular market is held on the fairground behind the village itself overlooking the motorway every Wednesday and Saturday morning from 9am until 2pm. The market offers fresh flowers, fruit and vegetables, leather goods and clothing.
A notable annual event in La Cala de Mijas is the town's feria, which takes up the same fairground as the bi-weekly market during the last two weeks of July. The bustling fair attracts residents and tourists from all along the Costa del Sol and features live music and dancing contests, rides and sideshows, as well as a variety of stalls offering Spanish food and drink into the long hours of the night.
La Cala de Mijas is located in the heart of the Costa del Sol, nestled between the coastal beaches of the Mediterranean and the mountainous Spanish countryside. La Cala is a 30 minute drive away from Malaga International Airport, just a 10 minute drive away from the popular coastal town of Fuengirola to the east, and a 20 minute drive away from Marbella to the west.
La Cala is well serviced by bus services in either direction, including a short bus ride away from Fuengirola centre where there are regular train connections to Malaga International Airport and the city centre which now offers 3-hour train links to Madrid.
Citizens from European countries can use the European Health Insurance, which can easily be obtained in your home country.
Residents in Spain have full access to the Spanish health care, which is free for those contributing to the Spanish Social Security system.
There are also a number of Private Health Insurance companies. Rates for Spanish private health insurance are very low compared to many other European countries.
There are a number of health facilities located in La Cala de Mijas, including Clinica Medicare, El Centro de Salud La Cala de Mijas and Interklinic La Cala. Nearby Fuengirola also offers a number of medical facilities, including the Centro Medico Xanit and Centro Salus Clinic.
All Spanish health facilities, private and public, enjoy a very good reputation and usually offer free translation services for those who don't speak Spanish.
Education in public schools is free and most offer a variety of extra-curricular activities, transport and tutoring for non-Spanish pupils. La Cala de Mijas has a large number of public schools such as Colegio Publico El Chaparral and children must register at the local town hall to apply.
There are also some fantastic private schools in La Cala de Mijas, including St. Anthony's College for both Primary and Secondary pupils.
