Malaga airport sees highest number of arrivals in its 100 years of existence in August

This August, Malaga airport registered the highest number of passengers in its 100 years of existence. According to figures released by Aena, over 2,2 million passengers passed through the coastal airport at the height of summer. The figure is 4.4% higher than the same month last year and represents a cumulative increase of 5.6% in the first 8 months of the year, with a total of 13,6 million travellers in 2019 so far - exceeding predictions made early this year.

A total of 15,600 flights arrived and departed from the airport last month, carrying both national and international passengers. The Costa del Sol was the main destination for many international flyers, welcoming over 1.9m of those visitors this August. The largest group hailed from the United Kingdom with 696,538 travellers, arriving from one of the 19 airports that offer direct flights to Malaga, followed by Germany with 163,177, France with 153,242 and Holland with 115,631. Aena also noted a notable increase in passengers from Ireland and Italy, up by 23.6% and 8.3% respectively.

Following a slight dip in arrivals during the same month last year, Malaga airport closed out the first 8 months of 2019 with a 10% increase in international passengers and a 5,2% increase in national arrivals. The number of flights on the airports runways between January and August alone hit 100,000, up by 4.3%.

While the south of Spain has always drawn visitors from across the globe, the last decade has seen an exponential growth in tourism in the region. Malaga airport welcomed 1.4m arrivals in August 2009, that figure has now doubled a mere decade later. Nurtured by a vastly improved infrastructure and an influx of new cultural institutions and attractions in the region, Aena's report speaks to the noticeable surge in the cities popularity and draw worldwide.
