Costa del Sol's Estepona selected to be included in new edition of Monopoly Spain

Estepona on the Costa del Sol has been selected as one of 22 stops in a forthcoming new ‘Spain’ edition of the popular board game Monopoly.

Established in 1935, Monopoly has sold over 300 million boardgames in 103 countries and in 37 languages. Including Monopoly Spain, over 200 different versions of the game have been created to date. The Spanish edition of the world-famous board game is the first of its kind and will be available for purchase by next Christmas.

Owned by Hasbro, Monopoly opened a vote earlier this year to source 20 cities with more than 50,000 habitants and two municipals of less than 50,000 habitants to be included in the new edition of Monopoly Spain.

The Mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano praised the news as welcome support that will contribute to help gain further visibility to the area saying, "Estepona has transformed into a modern city, with numerous tourist attractions and a great quality of life; we are convinced that the presence of the city in this popular board game will be another added value to the promotion and recognition of our town".

Estepona is a small town located on the west of the Costa del Sol with an overall population of 70,000. Despite its popularity as a tourist resort, the town has maintained its Andalucían charm and is largely characterised by quaint cobbled streets lined with local restaurants and bars, unusual shops and bodegas.

Estepona has gained significant traction since 2011 as a point of interest and tourist destination via projects like Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol which saw through a 2-million euro refurbishment of 98 Estepona streets, and cultural initiatives such as the Estepona Murals, an ongoing project that gives local artists the opportunity to contribute street art in certain locations.

Estepona offers a number of excellent facilities including eight golf courses, seven museums, a marina and a well appointed beach, and some of the best luxury health and wellness

centres and spas on the Costa del Sol. Take a look at further information on Estepona and what the area has to offer.
