Big win for eco-friendly developments and properties in Spain

The recent news that the so called "sun tax" is to be dropped is excellent news to anyone looking to invest in a holiday home or permanent residence here in Spain and at the same time do their part in looking after our environment. This new ruling means that there will be no taxes payable for the generation of surplus electricity via rooftop solar panels.

Since 1992 rooftop photovoltaic systems became available for residential use and was exceptionally successful for commercial use. Being connected to a national power grid offers financial benefits for the consumer as it is very common that any excess electricity generated outside of residential usage to be subject to a payback scheme making the owners of solar panels economically reimbursed for the energy they produce but do not use.

In Spain the rules have been different and energy companies have been a stable roadblock so last week's ruling brings Spain up to speed with most other countries around the world.

The Spanish Minister for Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera declared the ruling a triumph for common sense.
